Even though the company has expanded and changed through the generations, the family commitment to the business has remained constant.  Plant Telecommunications has been managed and operated by the Gleaton descendants for 112 years, spanning six generations. In 1895, when farm families in remote areas of South Georgia needed phone service, they turned to Ben Gleaton, who had run a magneto telephone line from his home in Doles, Georgia, to the farm home of his in-laws and eventually installed a switchboard to add lines to service the neighboring farmers.  The company was passed down to Ben's son, Henry, and then the growing business was passed down to his son J.P. Gleaton.  The company experienced tremendous growth and expansion under JP's outstanding leadership and vision.  Tifton was chosen as the headquarters of this locally owned telephone company because it was adjacent to the Lenox and Omega exchanges and because J.P. had established his home in Tifton even though it was a Bellsouth area. He decided on the "Plant" name because during this time the Omega exchange area was known as the "Starter Plant Capital of the World."

Today the Sterling-Metzger family jointly owns Plant Telecommunications; however, the company is managed primarily by the Sterling family.  "We want to keep this family business and pass it on to our children," says Beverly Gleaton Sterling, company Vice-President and great granddaughter of Ben Gleaton.

Beverly's husband, Danny Sterling, became the General Manager in 1983 and has served as the President/General Manager since 1996 while Beverly's sister, Betty Chloe Gleaton Metzger, serves as the other Vice-President of Plant.
